Following Jesus: Still putting the pieces together
You’ve heard enough about Jesus to be curious, but not enough to make it all fit. The idea of following Jesus can feel both intriguing and unclear.
A story in the Bible begins in the same place. Two of Jesus’ followers were walking out of Jerusalem a few days after his crucifixion, talking about “everything that had happened.” They were confused and trying to make sense of what they believed, with no road map for what they were going through.*
Then a stranger came alongside them and asked what they were talking about. It was Jesus, though they were kept from recognizing him. He could have opened with “Surprise, it’s me!” Instead, he chose to walk with them in their confusion and be curious about their experience before sharing his own perspective.
Jesus sees the value in our doubts and questions. They’re as much a part of the journey as the answers, and they help cultivate an authentic friendship. What good friendship is built on pretending, or one person calling the shots? Jesus wants an honest, mutual friendship where our voice is wanted and we’re also willing to listen.
As in the story, he is just as invested in getting to know you, with all of the unique experiences that have shaped you. Each of us is on a journey of discovering Jesus, whether we have said yes to following or are still considering it.
Over time, he brings clarity, healing, and wholeness to our confusion as we make sense of our own story and how his story intersects with ours.
Many people who have followed Jesus for years will tell you that, whatever they expected at first, they didn’t know what they were getting into, and that it was the best choice they ever made.
Following Jesus is an adventure, and every adventure starts with a little trust that it’s worth it, even with the uncertainty and challenges ahead.
With Jesus, our confusion and questions are welcome. We work them out with him on the road ahead.
